Solar Power System in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and SkyPower Global have signed a joint development agreement to implement the first phase of an ultimately 1 000 MW capacity solar power project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Depending on the electric load profile, battery technology, site configuration and other parameters, a fully installed and functional solar PV system of IZUBA will cost between 2250$/kW anc 4250$/kW (or 2.25$/W to 4.25$/W), in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

What solar projects are being built in the DRC?

The main existing solar project in the DRC is a 1MW solar mini-grid with 3MWh of battery storage capacity built by Enerdeal and Congo Energy in the city of Manono, to supply the local population and SMEs. Enerkac has also developed a 1MW hybrid plant powering SNEL’s Kananga mini-grid in Kasaï Central (non operational in 2019).

How much does solar energy cost in DRC?

Equipping the remaining two third of the population with Tier 2 access to electricity through solar home systems comes with a much lower price tag, estimated at about USD 3.3 billion. Only a few private operators both local and international - have started to get into the DRC market.

When will DR Congo's solar power plants be built?

The plants are to be built by the Moyi Power joint venture and are expected to be completed within 18 months after the start of construction. According to the latest figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency, DR Congo only had 20 MW of installed PV capacity at the end of 2020.

Where can solar power be found in DRC?

Vast land areas with high-quality solar resource are found in the three regions of DRC. The best potential is located where unmet demand is the highest along the Eastern border and in the Eastern half of the South-Western region (Map 8).

Are there solar mini-grids in the DRC?

Some mini grids are already operating in the region. EDC has 400 customers in Tshikapa (Lungundi I)39. The main existing solar project in the DRC is a 1MW solar mini-grid with 3MWh of battery storage capacity built by Enerdeal and Congo Energy in the city of Manono, to supply the local population and SMEs.

How much power does DR Congo have?

According to the latest figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency, DR Congo only had 20 MW of installed PV capacity at the end of 2020. The country has one of the lowest levels of access to electricity in the world, with only 9% of the population being supplied with power. This percentage in rural areas drops to as far as 1%.
