The edge seal is exposed to UV radiation and different weather conditions during the lifetime of the module. Moisture ingress will degrade the performance of a PV module. An advantage of the glass-glass configuration is that moisture ingress can occur only along the perimeter of the module.

Here, using a Ca film deposited on a glass substrate, we demonstrate the evaluation of edge seal materials in a manner that effectively duplicates their use in a photovoltaic application and compare the results with standard methods for measuring water vapor transport.
